What Is Self Talk ? The Sportsmen's Secrets?

By Trevor Johnson

What is self talk and why is it called by some as the sportsmen's secret? When did you last watch your favorite tennis player congratulating herself after an ace? No, that was not an expression of happiness or a satisfied ego. It was self-talk. Top sportspersons are routinely taught how to use self-talk to remain motivated and keep energy levels high during an event. It is something that they learn and train for along with the technique of the sport itself.

Internal dialogue: We all have an internal dialogue going on inside our heads. While you are getting ready, going to work, sitting at a dinner and almost at any other time, there is a conversation going on inside your mind between you and your Inner Self. Sometimes, in moments of aloneness, we tend to notice this dialogue more. When we are busy, we are able to completely ignore this conversation. We have the innate abilities to notice it or not at different times.

Motivational tool: Self-talk is a great motivational tool. It can help boost your confidence, keep you pepped up and become a go-getter. With special training or use of subliminal self-hypnosis CDs, you can use this self-talk to help you perform at an optimum level before an important event. Modern management strategists suggest using self-talk to gear up before an interview or business meeting.

Self-talk is one of the best ways to keep your confidence up. When people around us judge us, we tend to believe in their assessments and feel guilty, incompetent and useless. This can become a vicious circle as you start avoiding people and don't take up challenges at the work and personal level. You may also be suffering from phobias. In all these cases, self-talk can propel you to a better self-image and overcome your fears.

If you use self-talk properly you will be surprised by your own performance. It is a great tool to enhance your personality for both business and personal relationships.
