Ways of Treating Acne Scarring

By Rebecca Hall

It used to be that if you had acne scars from when you were younger, or developed them in adult life, you just had to live with them. There just weren't really a whole lot of options available for dealing with acne scars. However, medical science is always marching forward, and in the past decades a lot of progress has been made.

There are truly a large number of options that are now available for treating scarring. They range from something as wacky as putting sliced tomatoes over your scars all the way to having them burned away by lasers. The kind of results you can expect from these different methods may vary, a lot of which depends on your skin type and the severity of the acne scarring that you have.

As for what method is the "best" method, it really depends on whom you ask. A lot of new age people will tell you to stick with natural methods, such as using lemon and lime juice or herbal pastes. These methods can work, but usually not as well as people are hoping they will. On the upside, they are usually quite cheap, so trying them doesn't cost a lot.

However, if you ask your doctor about the best options for treating acne scarring, surgery will probably be the top recommendation. Surgical options can include laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, excision, subcision, and others. Generally, these methods are the most effective.

For those who are trying to avoid surgery, there are also a number of different topical creams that can help to fade away acne scars. Some of them may require prescriptions, and usually show good results. They generally will not be as effective as a surgical procedure however.

No matter what you do, trying to treat acne scars will probably require some amount of doctor visits. Home remedies are hit-or-miss, so if you don't want to waste time trying dozens of them, just visit your doctor and see what he or she suggests.
