Self-Hypnosis and Goal Setting - The SMART Way

By Kevin Jobim

Self-hypnotism is the art of hypnotising yourself and is actually a very easy thing to do. All you are required to do is follow a some simple steps. You then just repeat these steps every day until you have achieved your goal.

So the first and most important step you need to take is to set your goal. Set your goal and make it a strong goal. A strong gaol is essential if you are using self-hypnosis.

What is the purpose of setting a goal you might question? The answer is simple, if you don't have a goal you want to achieve self-hypnotism is useless. It just becomes meditation. Now there is nothing wrong with meditation it's actually very good to meditate. But meditation has nothing to do with achieving goals .

One very good way to set a goal that is really strong is to use the S.M.A.R.T. way. What do the letters S.M.A.R.T. mean I hear you say and how can they help me set a goal? Well, S is for Specific. M is for Measurable. A for Affect. R equals Realistic. And T is for Time.

Here's how you might go about setting a strong goal. Lets suppose your goal was to lose some weight. So using the S.M.A.R.T. formula this is what we might get:

Specific: a strong goal has got to be specific. The more specific you make your goal the easier it will be for self-hypnosis to help you to achieve it. So specific could be "I will shed exactly x pounds of my current weight".

Measurable :what does it mean here? Just this, you have got to know when you have achieved your goal. So you might say "I will stand on the scales on (add some future date) and they will show me I have lost exactly 14 pounds."

Affect: your goal must effect your life in some way once you've achieved it. So you could say " I will feel fantastic and very proud of myself on the (date here) when I get on the scales and they show me I've lost exactly x pounds".

Realistic: your goal has got to be realistic you have got to be able to achieve it. An example might be " I know I will be able to lose 14 pounds because I have checked my height/weight ratio and losing 14pounds is realistic."

Timed: its essential to set an exact date when you want to achieve your goal. An example might be " On the (date here) I will have shed x pounds off my weight and I will feel so pleased and proud of myself."

And that's it. S.M.A.R.T. and self-hypnosis will make it certain that you will achieve your goal.
