Debt, It's Nothing Personal

By Myer Thompson

You're nothing to debt collectors. You might not like it, but you're nothing but a number to them. It's nothing personal, in fact, its just business. The more innocuous you are, the better. They don't want to know about you early struggles in life or how you met your wife or how lovely your toddler is. They don't care. And they certainly don't want you to have anything to do with debt settlement reduction.

You're only human. You made some bad decisions. You borrowed too much and relied too heavily on the kindness of credit card companies and federal student loans. Now, the student loans, you can't do anything about except pay them or run. But, sooner or later, they win. Need a job? Great, the government will just garnish your wages.

Now, while credit card companies can't garnish your wages, they can hound you and make life hellish. You fail to pay, they take a pound of flesh from your credit rating. Now, with a credit score in the dumps, your life choices are limited. Want to move into a new apartment? Tough luck, unless you can put down two or three months in cash. What about a new car or a even a house? You had better be a cash saving phenomenon.

When you're the writing star in college you think the real world is just waiting for you to unleash your talent and start raking in the millions. Sorry, Mr. Clancy, no dice. College is there do to one thing, especially if you're in the arts, and that's to flatter you.

When you're heading to work at the supermarket, just think back at what a rock star you thought you were going to be and enjoy that moment of regret. The key to attaining any kind of financial freedom is to make sure your debts are squared away, your student loan is in good standing, and your bills paid on time. Then, slowly, you will see your credit score start climbing up into the decent range.
