Importance Of The Christian Funeral Service And Ceremony

By Gemma Brown

For a devout Christian, a funeral service is a celebration of the deceased's journey into eternal life hereafter. This is the main reason why such services are uplifting as they are looked upon as an assertion of the belief that the deceased has obtained a shelter in God's place.

Christians view death as a happy exit from the world of grief and an entry into the world of everlasting bliss. It provides some comfort to the bereaved family that the dead person is with the Lord Himself and is enjoying the bliss of heaven. This immensely helps in lessening the grief that death of a loved one causes. The Christian funeral service is conducted accordingly and with the same spirit.

Christian funeral service is normally conducted by the pastor. They are usually conducted at the church which the deceased used to visit when he or she was alive. Generally the services do not have casket, but when the service is being conducted in a funeral home, caskets are usually present. A traditional Christian funeral service does not involve public viewing of the deceased at the time of service.

The funeral service is conducted in the memory of the departed, and it begins with singing of religious hymns and readings from the Holy Scriptures and the Bible. Then the pastor delivers a message and the attendees follow with a mass prayer.

Then the assembled people partake in the grief of the family as well as close friends and tell about their own feelings as to how the deceased has influenced them and created a permanent impression on their minds. People nowadays do a slide show of pictures or play a pre-recorded video of the dead person taken during his or her lifetime.

The ceremony eventually ends with a brief fellowship reception at the church, where refreshments are served. A graveside service is normally not included, but some make an exception to this.
