The Responsibilities Of An Undertaker In A Funeral Service

By Anton Alvarez

Undertakers or funeral directors are perhaps the most important people, other than the close relatives and clergy to be related to the funeral service. These individuals are responsible for arranging the entire funeral, taking care of all the related aspects also. The task of undertakers is of such nature that they have to be on call anytime during the day and on any day in the year.

Death brings with it myriad decisions, which the bereaved are not able to take immediately in the face of their great loss. An undertaker acts as an advisor required to take such decisions. He takes quick and sound decisions regarding the time, location and type of the funeral service. Additionally, the undertaker actually helps you to be able to bear your loss, by simply being there for you and acting as an organiser of the funeral services, which depict the love and respect you have for the deceased.

Planning a funeral service starts with deciding upon its time, venue and date and then informing the same to relatives and friends. After taking this decision, the undertaker helps to shift the body to its resting site, which may be the funeral home or some other place. If a burial service needs to be conducted, then the undertaker also helps in selecting an appropriate coffin for the dead.

The undertaker handles every aspect of the funeral service, including arranging for flowers, transport, luncheon, priests, choir singers, ashes and headstone, and any other detail that should be focused upon. All plans are made by the undertaker keeping in mind the desires of the family members so that the departed gets due respect in the funeral service.

Lastly, some undertakers take care of the shipment and appropriate preservation of the body, and can organize the funeral service in a foreign country if wished for by the family of the deceased.
